Germany on the verge of gas agreements with Qatar

The German companies RWE and Uniper are ready to conclude long-term agreements on the supply of liquefied natural gas. Qatar is currently implementing a project to expand its northern oil field. Such an agreement will replace Russian gas in the future.

However, there are also difficulties. The first is that there is no common vision between the countries for the duration of contracts and prices. The second is the implementation of the project to expand the oil fields is scheduled for 2026. That is, there is no need to talk about full-scale LNG supplies for several more years.

Now both companies, RWE and Uniper, buy gas from Qatar on the spot market. On Saturday, Olaf Scholz will go on a business trip to the Persian Gulf. The chancellor is expected to sign gas agreements during the visit. Representatives of German companies will not participate in this visit.
