Ban on smoking in public places and double tax on cigarettes. What else does the Luxembourg public insist on?

Petitions on the topic of smoking as well as others have already appeared on the website of the Chamber of Deputies. 2 documents at once are devoted to the issues of the harm of tobacco products.

The goal of one of them is to protect the environment and non-smokers from being exposed to tobacco smoke. The authors motivate the need to ban smoking in public places, including the fact that cigarette butts actively destroy the environment.

In the future, such a ban will also reduce the number of fires caused by cigarettes. In addition, the interests of those who are forced to be exposed to smoke must be taken into account. This is a health issue.

Separately, a petition is presented calling for a double tax on cigarettes (including electronic ones) and on tobacco products in general. Among the reasons for signing the document is the need to combat tobacco smoking. Regulatory methods, namely the tax increase, are noted as effective in the fight for the health of citizens.

According to the petitioners, even taking into account statistical distortions due to cross-border purchases, Luxembourg has one of the highest rates of cigarette purchases per capita. At the same time, the Grand Duchy levies the lowest taxes on these products in the entire EEA.

What other petitions did Luxembourgers register

In addition to the smoking petitions, among the issues that are up for public vote are the adjustment of the lossde deduction on taxes for individuals and merchants, the adjustment of the taxation mechanism, the adjustment of the tax table for inflation, and many others. A complete list of documents put to the vote was compiled by RTL.

If a petition gains the required 4500 signatures, it is submitted for discussion to the parliament. You can vote for any or even every initiative, as always, on the official website.
