Moving abroad with a pet is quite a hassle and involves several mandatory steps. Veterinary services in different countries have their own rules and procedures. You should therefore prepare for your trip taking into account the specifics and requirements of the country you are travelling to.

The dog's name is Sawyer. He is a purebred Corgi 

. We decided between Sawyer and Athos. Now I remind my husband that Athos wouldn't have been a wallpaper chewer as a baby. He will be three in May, so he was vaccinated against rabies as we prepared to move.

When the hostilities started in February, I got him a chip as soon as possible, just in case. According to the rules, a dog or cat can only be chipped after the first vaccination. It was easier for us. He was an adult by then.

In addition, his vaccinations were due in July, so it was perfect timing. And because it wasn't his first vaccination, we didn't have to quarantine him. The fact that the EU does not require owners to have rabies serology titres also made things easier.

In general, documentation requirements depend on the country of entry. We would have had to check the requirements in Turkey and then in the EU if we had flown via Turkey, for example. But we went straight through. So there were no extra complications.

We have a second passport because Sawyer got his first one stuck in his teeth. I filled it out myself straight away in English. When everything was ready, we went to Vnukovo to get a veterinary certificate to cross the border. This can be done at any airport and, if I am not mistaken, there is a veterinary station in Moscow and St Petersburg that issues such certificates, but it is best to check.

My husband had an early flight and the company paid for his transfer, but only for him. So it was the dog and I travelling alone.

From Moscow we took the Sapsan train to St Petersburg. These trains have special carriages with separate seats for passengers with pets. You have to carry them on the train. So we bought him a Skudo cage. They are quite big and spacious. But the dog travelled in my arms all the way. Nobody said anything, there was another dog travelling next to us and everything was fine.

From St Petersburg, however, the journey was more interesting. I contacted several companies to find out what travel options were available. It was not possible to take the dog on the bus. I think the border checkpoint where the buses pass through doesn't allow animals to be checked. The reason for this is probably so that there are no delays in the flow of people. So I had to book a private transfer from my hotel directly to the airport in Helsinki, which I did.

It was expensive, of course. But plane tickets in those days were outrageous. I wasn't able to go with the dog myself, either. I had my driving licence, but what would I do with the car, as no one would take it away? We decided that a transfer was the best option as there was no one to pick us up. In any case, it turned out to be a lot cheaper than the flight from Moscow.

The transfer turned out to be the most expensive. Flying from Helsinki to Paris is not very expensive in general. And my husband used miles. So it turned out to be quite cheap.

When we got to the airport there was plenty of time before the flight, so I checked in early. I was told I didn't have to take my dog in yet. So I could go out for an hour. When we got back we met another girl with a dog. She asked me if I had any cage bolts. She had a dog as well, but it was quite a big one — bigger than Sawyer. Well, she had a cage that was bolted together with real bolts — strong metal ones.

I didn't have any bolts, of course. There were just latches on the cage itself, and I started to tighten them up in a hurry. Luckily, no one had checked anything at all.

Then they checked the dog's papers and sent us to a separate room to check the cage into the luggage. There I gave Sawyer a kiss and said goodbye. Then I went to board the plane.

I don't know what the temperature was like in the pet compartment, but when I went to pick up the dog in Paris, he jumped happily into my arms and looked quite healthy. He didn't seem to suffer from flying. Back in Moscow, on the vet's advice, I bought a tranquilliser for the dog. But I decided not to give it to him as he was calm anyway. By the way, we were on an AirFrance flight because the airline had a good reputation as a reliable and responsible airline.

Now a little bit about Paris. When I arrived, I couldn't find my pet for a long time. Everyone was pointing and saying: "Go this way, go that way". Finally, I got to the oversized cargo belt, and he actually came out to me on the cargo belt! There was a strong rope wrapped around his whole cage. I didn't do that, so I guess the staff at the airport in Helsinki must have done that.

We were not asked for any documents at all. I think it was because the flight was from EU to EU. Then we took the train to Germany, because in the summer of 2022 there was no direct train connection between France and Luxembourg. On the train he sat on my lap, just like in the Sapsan. The only thing is that my husband read somewhere that there should be a muzzle. We bought one, but I don't remember putting it on. Well, just in case they asked for it. But nobody demanded anything and the dog behaved well.

And on the bus from Germany to Luxembourg, no one asked anything, no one demanded anything. We got there with the dog on our laps. This part of the trip was very relaxing.

This is not a trivial question. I've seen a lot of information 

 and I've heard from people that it's very difficult to find accommodation with a dog in Luxembourg. And with a pet in general.

Finally we found an agent to accompany us. He has two dogs himself and he liked us as a couple. Of course we also sent a picture of Sawyer. Anyway, he did the negotiations with the landlord and vouched for us. We also had employment contracts to prove that we could keep and look after a dog. It was also a way of proving that we would be able to pay for any repairs that might be needed and so on.

But it's really a matter of luck. I can't make any recommendations. I know that many people have real problems finding accommodation. I wish that everything would be resolved as quickly and as well as possible.

When you arrive in Luxembourg, there are several stages to go through. We haven't even been through all of them yet.

First we went to the vet for a general check-up. Sawyer was given a complete check-up. What really surprised and amused me was that they even measured his blood pressure with a tiny tonometer. I've never seen anything like that for dogs before, only for humans. Cuteness squared.

Then the passport has to be replaced. We had an international passport, but not a European one. So the document has to be reissued. I'm not sure if this is a strict requirement. But with this passport he will definitely be in the European system. They will be able to identify him by his chip and return him to his owners if he gets lost.

It's not a quick process, so we went through a vet. They took all my documents and sent them all the way to Brussels. That is where the registration and processing takes place.

The next step is the insurance. A dog must be listed on your insurance policy in order to be officially registered in Luxembourg.

Then you must go back to the vet for a certificate that all your dog's papers are in order. I already have such a certificate. All I need to do is go to the Municipality and get registered.

Then the municipality will calculate the tax for the dog. I have to pay this tax once a year.

We don't know how much it will be yet. It depends a lot on where you live. So we will have to go to the council soon and get the receipt in the post.

And we shouldn't forget to get vaccinated. It is regulated in the same way here as it is in Russia. Once a year you have to get a vaccination against rabies. The animal must also have regular parasite treatment: tick pills, worming and so on.

Is it really important to have pet insurance

We had an insurance claim. It happened one day in late February. My husband was returning from a walk with Sawyer. They were not far from a neighbour's house and it was quite dark. The neighbour has a huge dog. It is a Romanian Carpathian Shepherd.

The dog made a hole in the fence, went outside and waited for my husband. As he got closer, the dog lunged at Sawyer, grabbed him by the teeth and threw him to the side. My husband grabbed our dog and shouted at the dog. It went back out through the gnawed hole. Perhaps it was frightened by the man's threatening voice. Or perhaps it knew a few commands.

The doctor at the clinic examined the dog and gave him three injections. There was an anaesthetic, an antibiotic and something else, I think it was morphine. But she said she couldn't operate on the dog because the wound was on his chest, fur could get in, and there were lungs, heart, all that stuff.

We were not allowed to feed Sawyer, only to give him water. We also allowed him to sleep in the room with us at night to monitor his condition. He usually sleeps in his own spot in the hall. At night I woke up to a terrible rumbling in his stomach — we feed him after a walk, so this time he went to bed quite hungry. It was very miserable for the baby.

In the morning we drove to the clinic and he was taken in for surgery. They shaved a square of hair off his side, patted him down, put on a 'cone of shame' (

the ironic name for a post-operative collar for animals, ed

) and gave him to us. It must have helped that the corgi has a thick undercoat. The wound was not very serious. If Sawyer had been a small dog, I dread to think what would have happened.

The neighbour came to see us the next day. He was very polite and apologetic. We think it was so we wouldn't have to report him to the police. The consequences could have been very serious. But we didn't. Everything ended well, and after all we were neighbours, we still lived next door to each other.

The police came and asked how we were and if everything was all right. The police also gave me a business card with the number of a detective on it, apparently. They told me to get in touch if I needed anything.

How to move to Luxembourg with a dog

It could be difficult to enrol a child in a school, even in your own country. And it's even tougher to do this in a different place, in a new foreign environment. Sometimes, even the most well-designed system can present unexpected challenges.

The most important aspect was psychological preparation, actually, which we started in advance. I had to explain to our daughters that their father found a new job and would be traveling for work; that he is waiting for us, and we will join him soon. There will be different schools, different children, and a different language, so they wouldn't experience such a strong shock. We didn't seek the help of psychologists, and I had these conversations with them personally.

In addition, our eldest daughter, Dunia, turned 7 in winter, and I thought she would go straight to primary school, Cycle 2.1. German is the main language of instruction there, so we found a teacher who gave her online language lessons. From the end of December, she had German lessons twice a week for 30 minutes.

Since none of the children had attended school before, we didn't have any documents to prove their academic performance, for example. We prepared notarized translations of their birth certificates in English, took their medical records from the kindergarten, and we also had their vaccination certificates on hand.

We had consent for the children to travel abroad, but it wasn't asked for. The only thing that confused the border guards was our surnames. My husband and I have different surnames; I kept mine, but the children have his surname. In the end, my inner passport with children's noters has been checked. After that, there were no more questions.

Everything starts with registering at the municipality. My case will probably be very atypical.

While we were preparing, I read information about the state school system in Luxembourg. Everyone wrote that the process is quite fast: you have to go to the municipality, they take care of everything, and enrol your child in school. I flew there, and I was sure that Dunia would be placed in school within a week, but it turned out to be much more interesting.

When we first went to the municipality, they refused to register us. The staff member said that since we are third-country nationals, non-EU citizens, we needed to first approach the immigration service.

The next day I went back to the immigration office with my children. There were secretaries sitting there. I went up to them and said: «So and so, they sent me to you». They seemed very surprised and told me they couldn't understand why we had come and what we wanted. But they gave me an email address to help.

I wrote to them. They replied the next working day. It turned out that we had done everything correctly and that the municipality should have registered us. They sent me a list of all the documents they could ask for, moreover, I kept the letter.

In the end, when I went back to the municipality, there was another employee who looked at the papers and registered us in literally a few minutes! At that stage, however, we had wasted a lot of time. I think our first visit was on March 23 and our second on March 28. In other words, we missed the official three-day registration deadline, but it seemed nobody really cared.

The further, the better. On our first visit to the local government office, the same official who had refused my application for registration referred me to the post office of the Ministry of Education. This is where all questions should go, he said.

So on the 31st of March, when we finally had the registration after the TB test, I wrote a letter. And the 31st of March is the last day before the Easter holidays. Of course, no one answered me during the holidays. I wrote another letter and then another. After the holidays I sent a reminder that I still hadn't heard anything.

This time I got an answer: "Have you registered with your local authority? If not, please register as soon as possible. Otherwise, the municipality should have sent your forms. Only after we have received your details we can take care of your children's schooling".

So I sent copies of our registration forms and decided to go back to the municipality the next day. My husband works in an office, it is the high season and it is very difficult for him to stay at home with children, so I had to take them with me.

I don't know what happened, but I think that the Department got a little worried and asked the council to get involved. Somehow I'm pretty sure that they did. Anyway, when I got home I wrote to the Ministry of Education again. This time they replied that they had received all the documents and had arranged an interview for me.

The interview took place in the canton's capital. We live in the town of Lorentzweiler. When we arrived, we were met by a very nice woman who took us into a separate room and explained some details.

My eldest daughter has been interviewed by a psychologist.

While my daughter did her problems, I spoke to the psychologist.I explained how school works in Russia. We go to school when we are seven, not four. We completed a questionnaire. As for the younger one, the psychologist said that she wasn't going to fill in any information because her main interest was in the older one. But she did make a note on the form that Dunia had a sister called Uliana.

When Dunia had finished the tasks, the psychologist had a look at the answers and said that she wouldn't have any problems with the first grade maths curriculum, but that she would have to speak German. Dunia needed to be tested.

Dunia was given the alphabet and here she was completely confused and did nothing. I explained that my daughter had only been studying the language for a few months. She was building up her vocabulary and everything would come with time. I asked her to do a translation of some of my sentences from Russian into German, which she did.

They offered to do one of two things. The first was to go to a regular school for a few months, it's cycle 2.1. But the problem was that German was weak and there was not enough time to learn it. The psychologist was afraid that her daughter would not have time to catch up on her knowledge and that she would have problems because she did not know Luxembourgish. 

Going to a play school for a few months is the second option. That's cycle 1.2, the children are younger there. This option had several advantages: Dunia would start learning Luxembourgish and there would be no rush with German. She would get used to the new environment, get to know the children and she would have no homework, so the workload would be much less.

Education system in Luxembourg

Of course, Dunia was a bit upset at first. But when I explained why this was necessary and what she would be doing, she cheered up and agreed to the second option. She will start school this week. There was no problem with enrollment to school in the middle of the year.

After the interview, we decided to take a day to think about it. The psychologist gave our questionnaire to the head of the education department and gave us her email address. I contacted her. She was very friendly, supported our choice and referred me to the president of the school board.

Again, we were very lucky: just half an hour after sending the message, the head of the department called me back and told me that she herself had already enrolled my daughters — the eldest in primary school and the younger Uliana in the local pre-school. The president of the school committee in turn passed on my telephone number to the teachers, and literally the same day I had a phone call from Dunia's future teacher with an appointment for a meeting.

I finally understood the whole scheme of how the school works. On Mondays the children go to the swimming pool, on Thursdays they go hiking in the woods, on Fridays they have sports lessons. On top of that, children are acquiring languages and basic academic skills.

The main problem with children as young as Dunia, as far as I've understood from what the psychologist said, is that there are no special integrated classes for them. This means that she would still be in cycle 2.1 if she went to school in Russia. Meanwhile, all additional integration with tutors and language courses is provided for older children who have already been studying in their own language for some time and who need to adapt very quickly to a new schooling environment.

I also noticed the problems with the timetable. The school has a standard daily routine for every type of school: daily from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and additionally from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. On these days, a child must be collected between 12 noon and 2 pm, eat lunch at home and return to school. However, there is an option for after-school care.

This is the best option for parents like me. I don't work yet. Generally speaking, I could pick up my daughter, but I would have to do it with another child who is only 3.5 years old. As you can imagine, this is very time consuming.

Usually, the children stay there between classes. They have meals and games together. It is also possible to drop them off at other times of the day. You can pick them up later if you need to. I think they are open until 7pm. I have a timetable.

Maison Relais is not available for everyone

The biggest problem with the Maison Relais is that it might not even be available. According to my information, if both parents work, the child is automatically enrolled in after-school care center. However, if at least one of the parents does not work, like in my case, you can only get a place based on availability.

To apply for enrollment, you need to submit a package of documents. I'm doing that right now. They will require information about the parents' work, their timetable, a photo of the child, medical certificates, vaccination cards and some others. The application form is provided in French.

But there are still good news! The state covers some part of the costs, though not all of them. In order to get compensation, you have 

The girls and I went back. We presented the necessary documents, the most important of which was a payslip from my husband's job. You need to have recent payslips for three months, but as I discovered, it's no problem if you only have one. It's more complicated for those who don't have payslips at all. I actually don't know how freelancers do it, but there's got to be a system for them, I can't say for sure.

The staff member of Maison Relais of the Red Cross took the documents, made some calculations and gave us receipts. These showed how much we would pay and for what. In the end, we got the first 13 hours of childcare for free, and then we will have to pay for every hour above that. You can see the receipt itself, here it is:

This means that the state actually reimburses an impressive amount of the costs, and without such a service in place, the childcare bills are much more costly.

I have already downloaded the ClassDojo app that my teacher recommended. It's an application where teachers can upload photos of field trips, lessons, announcements, etc. Sort of a platform to communicate with parents about their children.

In the municipality we have an attendant on the bus. This means you entrust the children to someone who looks after them. This is very practical because I can just put my oldest and youngest daughters on the bus without taking them to school myself.

The main disadvantage of the bus is that it picks children up in the morning, brings them home for lunch and goes back to school. It also picks up children in the evening after school. However, if a child is in Maison Relais, the parents have to pick them up themselves. Meaning that the bus always follows the general timetable.

Overall, I'm sure the girls are going to have a great time living and studying here.

How to enrol a child in a school in Luxembourg

It took me a while to get to Luxembourg. When I finished eleventh grade, I first went to London under the Foundation program. I was planning to stay there, but then 2014 came when the first sanctions were imposed on Russia. The exchange rate of the British pound went over 100 roubles at the time, so it became very expensive. I didn't want to be a burden on my whole family. Plus, there was the risk of not being able to finish my studies at all. On top of all that, homesickness was starting to kick in. So I decided to move back to Moscow and looked for double-degree programs in English. The Higher School of Economics and Moscow State Institute of International Relations offered them.

It was in 2013, I think, that the School of Government and international affairs program appeared in MGIMO. The program was entirely in English. Since I already had an IELTS certificate and a completed Foundation program, I was accepted as a foreign student.

It took me 4 years, and there was the Bologna system, meaning that I had no need to bring my diploma in accordance with the European programs. I finished my bachelor's degree, wrote a paper, by the way, about blockchain, and got my diploma defense. By the way, I got quite a good grade, I got an average of 89 and the defense received a 95. That helps in the future.

While the program at MGIMO was extensive, I felt that I lacked knowledge. There was a choice: CFA or master's degree. However, everything I was looking at would cost an insane amount of money. I wanted something more budget-friendly, without the involvement of family financing :)

I had been looking in Germany and France, and somehow the University of Luxembourg caught my eye. There was a program called Asset Management.

It was about that time that the covid started, and the language centers were closing. And I just wanted to get another certificate to make a nice portfolio so that I would definitely be accepted. But, alas, it didn't work out. So I applied to only one university for two programs — Wealth Management and Economics.

I also wanted to take GMAT, because it seemed, that my Bachelor's program did not have enough financial history and it would be difficult for me to get into the programs I applied for. I registered for the exam, yet I kept getting feedback that the dates were being rescheduled and then canceled due to covid restrictions. The application deadline was fast approaching. I remember how I was sobbing, but at some point, I thought "Hey, whatever happens, I'll turn in everything I have at the moment".

The motivation letter is especially important; it gets a lot of attention when selecting a candidate. 

I probably spent a day writing it. First, I briefly talked about myself: who I am, what I have achieved, and why I need to be at the University. The most important thing in a motivation letter is to answer the question — why do you need the program, and how does it relate to your dream? One of my dreams is to start my own foundation. Therefore, the master's program is not the end. Foundations are a lifelong learning field. That is what my emphasis was built on.

What else you need to know about motivational letters

I made a completely standard CV, in English. However, more importantly, I had quite an impressive portfolio, because I had taken many courses in Russia at different venues, and I enclosed all the available certificates.

How to write a CV properly

The Wealth Management program was the first one to respond to me. Early in the morning, the dean emailed me: «So and so, I am glad to inform you that you have been accepted to the program». I was very surprised then, I thought it was some kind of scam. Usually, the university sends an official letter, but this was just a message, signed by a person. I searched for who it was, and it turned out — indeed, the dean!

I was very lucky, I didn't have any admission tests at all! A girl from the student community told me later that there was an unreal pile of applications for my program, dating back almost as far as the 2000s. They review them regularly and send invitations to the earliest ones if they are still relevant.

I talked to the dean about why it turned out that I didn't wait all that time in line. He replied that the motivation letter really got to him. Plus it was a strong score. Work experience also helped!

Generally, the university does everything for you. Basically, you only need to get a visa D and submit all the necessary documents. They will help you arrange your residence permit, insurance, and dormitory.

If I am not mistaken, I confirmed the amount of about $20,000. I was still working part-time back then, and I negotiated that point too. Students in Luxembourg are allowed to work no more than 20 hours a week. When I arrived, the minimum amount for a month was about 1350 euros per month, not including rent.

You then receive a certificate from the university stating that you are enrolled for the first semester. Next, you need a certificate from the municipality. Basically, the university gives you most of the documents you need. It's pretty easy in that respect.

You receive confirmation that the diploma has been accepted, and a statement that shows your grades. And that's it, then you get your card. It is valid for one year, and then you have to renew it.

The education program was originally about $15,000 to $20,000 a year. Then some structural changes took place: the state began to sponsor the program. As a result, the price was only 200 euros per semester, with the rest coming from the budget!

In the end, I only paid 800 euros for the tuition fee for the whole time. Of course, I still have to pay for insurance, which is about 200 euros, and for the dormitory — the deposit and the insurance of the dormitory itself.

Most of the subjects in the program are compulsory. There are extra courses that are optional, but because of work, I did not have time to master them.

We had a modular system, so we studied a lot of things. The program included all the disciplines of asset management, as well as various market instruments, including derivatives, stocks, bonds, and exchange-traded funds.

We learned everything, down to developing an asset management strategy. We also studied law, and it was a very deep immersion: we studied Muslim law and Shariah laws. We also had a course on the subtleties of the legislation in the stock market, since this is very developed and in demand in Luxembourg.

The modular grading system is quite comfortable. A module consists of 4 subjects, and a passing grade is 10 out of 20. If you don't make it in one course, but you do well in the others, they give you a pass in advance. I had the same thing in Green Finance. I was not really interested in this module, so I barely went to class and got a 9.5. But I got 15-20 points in three other subjects from that module, so they gave me credit.

Twice a semester you have your favorite exams, of course. There are two times during the semester when you have to pass tests and show your knowledge. Just like in Russia. The only difference is that in Russia they try to put exams with an interval of 2-3 days, while here they can put them almost in a row.

For example: on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, or, say, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday. That's very stressful. You really have to know the discipline well, because there's almost no time to prepare.

It was very easy because I love what I do. I was already on an internship when the conflict between Russia and Ukraine began, and I saw the impact that the sanctions had on the market for financial instruments related to Russia in one way or another.

These sanctions were issued with a such rapid speed that European financial institutions simply did not have time to interpret them; no one knew exactly what to do or how to do it. Therefore there were plenty of problematic cases to study. I chose for myself the topic of ADR/GDR issuers of the Russian Federation, which were traded on foreign sites, and almost immediately entered the block.

As a result, thanks to my huge practical experience, I finished my thesis in three nights and got 18.5 out of 20.

I can say that there is always something for students to do. The university itself organized a lot of different parties. For example, during the covid, they helped the students in every way possible. There were online seminars, online yoga, and psychological help available for those who needed it.

The startup community was growing at that time too. In fact, students were sitting at home, and had nothing to do, and they started organizing conferences, some kind of brainstorming sessions — it was pretty cool! In addition, the state gives grants, so everyone was encouraged to do things.

The University of Luxembourg is famous for its business incubator and its help to startups. During covid, we all stayed at home for the first year; there were plenty of contests, competitions, and collaborations.

When the covid was over, the university started hosting parties again. Free language courses returned. Seminars on all kinds of topics began again. For example, we had seminars about vaccines, how they work, and how they are produced. Experts from Pfizer were invited, and they talked about how they derive formulas, and how drugs are developed.

I was hanging out with my friends mainly, we were used to having fun in a small group. But I went to the university's festivities, too. I attended a Halloween party, for sure. I also went to a rock concert, for which the university gave me a ticket, too. The university does this quite often: it buys tickets for exhibitions, concerts, and master classes and gives them to students for free.

Things to keep in mind when getting ready to move as a student

As I said before, your task is only to get a D Visa, the rest will be done for you by the university.

Documents for D Visa for a student include:

Two 3.5x4.5 cm color photos on a bright background — white or light blue. The photo must be without stains, folds, scuffs, glare, fuzzy or any other defects. You need a photo without corners and ovals on matte paper;

A valid passport, which is valid for at least 3 months after the expiration date of the visa requested. Two blank pages are required;

Original of the approval of temporary residency;

Photocopies of pages of your internal passport;

Schengen visa application formula (they are the same for C Visa and D Visa). Downloadable from the website of the Luxembourg Consulate in your country;

Consular fee (the amount of the fee varies and depends on the specific country).

Even though studying at a Luxembourg university can be challenging, it is more than compensated for by the opportunities it offers. Moreover, the university provides a lot of help: it arranges the necessary documents, assists with visas and residence permits, organizes leisure activities, and offers access to the scientific and business environment.

All this contributes to the development of personal skills and allows you to better understand what you want to do in life.
