Food prices in Luxembourg rose by more than 10%

War, climate change and the effects of COVID-19 remain the main drivers of food price rises.

Over the past 12 months, the cost of flour, pasta and cereals has increased by almost 18%. Milk’s not far behind — it costs 16% more now. The prices of chicken and pork rose about 14%. War’s the main reason for the high cost of meat. Chickens and pigs are livestock fed with grain and their feed supply is now regularly disrupted.

Beef also costs 12.5% more now. However, unlike pork and chicken, COVID is to blame. During the pandemic, the livestock population has been greatly reduced. Cows take much longer to grow than other livestock, so it may take several years to fully restore the number of animals and the amount of meat available.

The average price growth for all food categories was 11%.
