Luxembourg runs for UN Security Council

Luxembourg became one of Security Council’s ten non-permanent members in 2013 and 2014. The five permanent members are France, USA, UK, China and Russia.

Luxembourg is now in the running to become a member of the Security Council again. This was stated by Prime Minister Xavier Bettel in his recent speech on the war in Ukraine, global hunger and climate change.

Bettel proposes to reform the UN Security Council as a response to the war in Ukraine. As Prime Minister reminds in his speech, Russia, a permanent member of the Council, has paralyzed its work in recent months with vetoes. Luxembourg wants to devise a more efficient Council structure.

During his speech, Bettel also spoke out for peace and security in Ukraine, Mali and the Middle East. The Prime Minister continues to champion human rights and support humanitarian action in the Sahel, Syria, Yemen and Afghanistan.
