Will far-right in Italy abide EU treaties? Jean Asselborn expresses hope for this

The far-right party Fratelli d’Italia won the nationwide election, gaining about 25% of all votes.

Party leader Georgia Meloni automatically becomes prime minister. In her politics, she is closer to Hungary and shares its views on LGBT community, abortion and immigration. Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn praised Italy’s decision not to leave the EU and accept the rules of the union. On the other hand, the politician could not fail to note the presence of Mussolini’s torch on the party flag.

Voter turnout was the lowest in Italian history at about 64%. Experts attribute such low indicators to the population’s fatigue and the constant change in party composition. And yet, 22% to 26% of the population voted for the Fratelli d’Italia. The Democrats scored only 17-21%, and the Five Star Movement — 13.5-17.5%.
