Tom Weidig saves his position in ADR

The ADR (Alternative Demokratesch Reformpartei) party has examined the case of Tom Weidig, which has caused a wide resonance in Luxembourg. The MP was at the centre of a scandal after he approved a Facebook post calling for the "destruction" of the LGBT community. Despite numerous demands for his expulsion, the party decided to limit itself to a written warning.

ADR said in a statement that Weidig "clarified his position, apologised and admitted his mistake". A party committee meeting on Monday concluded that the MP "had no intention to destroy anyone and did not call for it".

Nevertheless, ADR officially warned Weidig for his provocative behaviour on social media. The text of the party's decision mentions that additional measures may be taken against him, but it does not specify what kind of measures. It is only known that possible sanctions were discussed within the party, and Weidig himself offered his own options for dealing with the situation.

The MP himself said earlier that he had put a "like" under the post by mistake, without reading its content. On Monday, he expressed regret over the scandal and stressed that he had "many times publicly expressed an opinion opposite to the content of this post", including during TV broadcasts.

The incident was a new test for ADR, known for its conservative views. The party's decision not to expel Weidig had already sparked a wave of criticism from the opposition and human rights organisations.
