How to extend your Luxembourg residence permit

ВIn 90% of cases, the grounds for extension will be the same as the grounds for the initial residence permit. For example, if you have received a residence permit for work, you will most likely be extended on this basis. There are other cases, if the previously obtained residence permit assumes a change of category. For example, if you were employed in a company, and then decided to go free sailing and opened a sole proprietorship, it is possible to extend your residence permit on the basis of a sole proprietorship in Luxembourg.

Depending on the basis for renewal, the set of documents required for the permit will vary. 

The application for the extension of the residence permit must be submitted two months before the expiry of the valid document. ‘Two months’ means that at the time of submission of the application to the Migration Board there must be at least 60 days left before the expiry of the valid residence permit. For example, if your residence permit is valid until 25 July 2024, you must submit your application and application package no later than Sunday, 26 May 2024. It is better to apply in advance to avoid weekends and public holidays. It is better to submit your request early than late.

Copy of valid passport

A passport is the main identity document. In Luxembourg, for third-country nationals, the main document will be a passport. It is necessary to provide photocopies of all pages, even if they are blank

The contract must be printed on paper, signed by both parties and comply with all Luxembourg legal requirements.

Confirmation of consular fee payment

Usually the time period for processing a residence permit application is up to 3 months. You will definitely receive a letter with information about approval or rejection, so do not forget to check your mail periodically.
