First Councillor Maurice Bauer presented the capital’s environmental report for 2024, emphasising that the city’s sustainable development remains a key policy priority for the municipal authorities. A large-scale greening programme has become a key focus, with plans to plant 30,000 trees on the city’s streets. At the same time, the administration is introducing a sponsorship scheme: residents who do not have their own gardens can take on the care of flower beds around tree trunks, receiving professional advice from municipal services.
Alongside the development of its green infrastructure, the city is focusing on sustainable consumption and energy saving. According to the report, 35% of new construction projects meet the highest energy efficiency rating (AAA), and 31 grants have been awarded for energy-efficiency upgrades to existing buildings. As part of the drive to combat excessive consumption, the authorities have funded 46 applications for the repair of household appliances, encouraging the refurbishment of existing appliances rather than the purchase of new ones. In addition, 33 green roofs have been installed in the city and 326 individual consultations on energy consumption have been held.
Nevertheless, the transport sector remains an area of significant environmental pressure. Every day, passenger cars cover a total of 1.6 million kilometres within the city. Despite these figures, the popularity of public transport and alternative mobility is on the rise: during the reporting period, buses and trams carried 37 and 32 million passengers respectively, whilst the Velo’h bike-share service is used more than 4,200 times a day.
In conclusion, Bauer noted that although CO₂ emissions in the capital have begun to fall, there is still significant scope for further improvement. In the near future, the administration plans to distribute information materials to residents to make it easier for them to access existing environmental subsidies and to explain the council’s sustainable development strategy.
