The Luxembourg branch of the Red Cross has issued an urgent appeal to the public following the depletion of blood stocks. As of today, reserves have fallen below the minimum level required to ensure a stable supply to healthcare facilities. The current blood supply will last for only eight to nine days, which jeopardises the healthcare system’s ability to meet patients’ needs in the near future.

Experts are most concerned about the critical decline in stocks of blood groups 2 (A) and 1 (O) with a negative Rhesus factor. According to Red Cross representatives, the current shortage is partly due to a decline in donor activity during the summer months. With the onset of autumn, the situation has not stabilised: many regular donors are currently unable to give blood due to seasonal respiratory illnesses and flu.

In order to restore blood stocks to a safe level, the health services are asking all members of the public who have no medical contraindications to become blood donors in the coming days or weeks. You can book an appointment in advance via a dedicated website or join the queue at the blood donation centre on Boulevard Joseph II in Luxembourg.
