On Sunday evening, 21 April, a serious accident involving an emergency police car occurred on the route de Longwy in Pétange, near the intersection with the Chemin de Brouck. This is reported by the Grand Duchy Police.
The vehicle was travelling towards Lamadelaine when it collided with another vehicle. The second car overturned on impact and stopped only after a few metres, according to the official report. The driver was a woman, who was alone in the passenger compartment and was taken to hospital for a preventive examination.
Two policemen in the official car were also injured. They were also hospitalised, but according to the police, their condition is not alarming.
During emergency braking, the police car knocked down a street lamp, which damaged two other parked cars as it fell. A total of four cars were damaged in the incident, the agency said.
On the order of the prosecutor's office, an official inspection was opened. Both vehicles directly involved in the collision were seized for technical expertise. A forensic police team worked at the scene and recorded the details of the accident.
The investigation should establish whether all procedures were followed in carrying out the urgent task, as well as the behaviour of the other parties involved in the accident.
Such incidents involving official vehicles are rare, but in an urgent mission, any mistake or hiccup can lead to a chain reaction. For this reason, the authorities emphasise the importance of observing both police protocols and extreme caution on the part of other road users.
