MP Marc Goergen sent a parliamentary enquiry concerning data breaches in the automotive industry. Prime Minister Luc Frieden and the Minister for Consumer Protection responded that there are currently no cases of this incident in Luxembourg.
The National Consumer Protection Directorate and the National Data Protection Commission (CNPD) have not received any complaints on this matter. The Luxembourg Consumers' Union (Union luxembourgeoise des consommateurs) has also not recorded any complaints from citizens.
On 17 January 2025, the German data protection authority in Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen) notified regulators across the EU, including Luxembourg's CNPD, of a potential data breach in the automotive industry.
The investigation is still ongoing and the CNPD could not provide further details on the possible consequences for Luxembourg residents.
Despite the lack of confirmed cases in Luxembourg, the authorities are closely monitoring the situation in the EU. It remains an open question whether this investigation will have an impact on the car market and whether additional measures will be introduced to protect the personal data of car owners in the future.
