After lengthy but constructive negotiations, the OGBL and LCGB unions have reached an agreement with the management of the International School of Luxembourg (ISL) on a new collective agreement. It concerns more than 300 employees and comes into effect retrospectively from 1 September 2024 for a period of three years. The key changes, which include a redesign of the pay scale, increased social benefits and flexibility in working time management, reflect both staff needs and new legislative requirements.
One of the main achievements was the complete renewal of the remuneration system for administrative and technical staff and teaching assistants. While previously their salary scale included 10 to 12 steps, it has now been extended to 24, which significantly increases the potential for career growth and income stability.
Equally tangible was the increase in the denomination of meal vouchers, from €10.80 to €15 from the school year 2025-2026. This change is primarily due to the rising cost of living and the recognition of the importance of social support for employees.
The section on working time emphasises transparency and workload management. A special workload calculator is introduced for high school teachers, and groups of counsellors are established for the distribution of working time in both primary and secondary schools. This measure is aimed at reducing overload and preventing professional burnout.
There is a lot of flexibility for support staff to take leave, a step that is especially important in a multi-tasking workday.
Additional payments for extracurricular activities - circles, sections and other forms of work outside the classroom - have been revised and increased. In addition, an article defining key terms and conditions has been included in the contract, which strengthens the legal clarity of the agreement.
All other benefits under the previous collective agreement remain unchanged. The new wage regulations will come into force on 1 September 2025, giving the school and its staff plenty of time to prepare.
