Every fifth Luxembourger was a victim of violence

STATEC has published its annual report, which contains some chilling data. Nearly one in five Luxembourgers aged 16 to 74 has been a victim of violence in the past year. The statistics included all categories: physical, psychological and sexual violence.

However, almost no one turns to the police for help. Of the 81 000 victims, only 22% asked for help from law enforcement, psychologists or social services.

The ratio of affected men and women is almost the same. 4% of women and 5% of men were subjected to physical violence. Psychological violence — 14% of men and 15% of women. However, statistics show that women are often attacked by people from their inner circle. This means that they have a high chance of becoming a victim repeatedly.

And at the same time, the likelihood of seeking help in such a case is also reduced. The inhibition threshold is much higher when illegal actions are committed by someone close, or worse — a loved one.
