Half of Luxembourg's household waste can be recycled or reused

Every three years, the Ministry of the Environment conducts a study of the contents of gray bins. Its goal is to determine whether it is possible to reduce the amount of waste even further by recycling or reusing it.
In 2021 and 2022, each Luxembourg resident threw away about 163 kilograms of waste. It's less than in 2013 when 223 kilograms were thrown away by each person. Therefore, the trend is quite positive.
However, according to the ministry, the maximum has not been reached yet. For example, about 10 out of the 46 kilograms of waste happen to be leftover or unopened food, 2 percent of which were still within the expiration date.
The study, for which 19.34 tons of waste from 15 communes was sorted, showed that about half of that volume could either be recycled or reused.
