Protect yourself during floods
The rise in water levels in the Alzette River continues. From 14:00 today until midnight on Thursday, the risk of flooding will be at its highest. We've put together some practical advice for those living in these areas.
First of all, check the flood map on the official Luxembourg geoportal. The greatest danger is from river overflows in the south of the country. However, don't assume that the north is much safer — the region is also at risk.
Prepare the essentials: documents, warm clothes, valuable equipment, food and medicines, and sleeping bags in case of evacuation. This will help you save time during the cataclysmic event and save your health.
Switch off the electricity in rooms that could be flooded. These are usually basements and ground floors, but in some cases it is better to de-energise the whole house, for example, if it is in a low-lying area.
Remove any toxic or dangerous items that could get into the water to a safe place. Drivers are also advised to move their cars to higher ground if possible.
