Meteorologist Luca Mathias of MeteoLux warns of severe thunderstorms in Luxembourg and the Greater Region on Tuesday. There is a risk of thunderstorm supercells - massive concentrated thunderstorm clouds with upward swirling air currents. This is a very rare phenomenon and therefore the most dangerous.

It is the supercell that is a requirement for tornado formation due to the strong air currents. When such a cloud is close to the ground and the vortices reach the surface, we get the very destructive tornadoes that recently destroyed several houses in Luxembourg and Belgium. However, the nature of such a storm is unstable and its development into a tornado cannot be guaranteed. That's why the last time the vortex was observed was in 2019, although supercells have definitely happened more often.

Another encouraging fact is that the thunderstorm front is now much larger than it was in the unfortunate year of 2019. It covers the entire Greater Region and may dissipate or, on the contrary, intensify in the safe territory of France or Germany, but the risks cannot be completely ruled out.
