Best live music venues in Luxembourg
Covid has hurt the concert industry. But this year the demand for live music is back. Several festivals took place during the summer. Performances are scheduled for autumn, winter and even next year. We present to you the best concert venues in the Grand Duchy.
Rockhal in Belval
Open since 2005. This venue accommodates 6500 people. In addition to live events, there are club evenings, musicals, classical performances and music shows for children.
Rockhal is a three-stage concert hall: there’s the main stage, and two clubs. The relatively new cozy club space on the second floor is for more intimate performances in front of an audience of 200 people. In addition there are six rehearsal rooms, a recording studio and a dance studio.
Placebo, Simply Red, Sting, Billy Talen and Volbeat will perform here during autumn-winter. Legends of Rock tribute concert and the Qwest hip-hop festival are also on the event list.
Den Atelier in Luxembourg City
The former truck garage on rue de Hollerich accommodates 1200 people. It’s venue with rich history spanning from 1995. Initially it specialized in alternative and indie music. Muse, My Chemical Romance, The Smashing Pumpkins and Arctic Monkeys gained some of their popularity here.
This winter, Wolf Alice, Macy Gray, Bastille (tickets sold out, unfortunately), The Libertines and Irish chamber pop legends Belle and Sebastian will perform here.
Neimënster in Luxembourg City
Classical, folk, jazz and blues all get a lot of play in the former abbey. There are numerous festivals, for example, January will be marked by the RESET jazz fest. The indoor theater seats only 300 people. But many concerts are held in the open air in a large courtyard.
Kulturfabrik in Esch-sur-Alzette
The former slaughterhouse hosts concerts, club nights and festivals. For example, it was one of the main Esch2022 sites. No more than 900 people can fit for a single show. Therefore, most often it’s a live venue for groups “widely known in narrow circles”. Death metal band Hypocricy, indie rockers Tuys and mathcore band Converge will be coming over in the next few months. The last one is especially a good pick even if you’re not a big fan of heavier sounds.
Rotondes in Luxembourg City
Cultural center in Bonnevoie. Bands play in a club inside the second Rotondes building. There is also a Black Box venue for smaller concerts. There is a studio, rooms for rehearsals and recording. By the way, Radio Ara broadcasts from here.
Winter programming includes Kit Sebastian, Porridge Radio and Los Bitchos.
De Gudde W’llen in Luxembourg City
Culture club on Rue Saint-Esprit. Operates since 2014. There are concerts, stand-ups, theatrical performances and film screenings to attend here. They mostly host indie darlings: Moon Duo, Khuruangbin and Masta Ace played this venue. Local jazz artist Sasha Lei, experimental pop band Uma Cine, indie rock outfit BRNS and post-punk performers Sparkling are to take the stage soon.
Aalt Stadhaus in Differdange
Municipal library, music school and a space for intimate chamber concerts in an auditorium with 200 seats (or 240 standing spaces). In addition to live performances, there are film screenings and stand-ups. The Spirit of Downtown and Portuguese punks Besta are among the popular names next on the line-up.
Op der Schmelz in Dudelange
Regional cultural center. Mainly caters to jazz lovers. Occasionally, up-and-coming rock and pop artists perform here. Like a Jazz Machine festival is organized by this venue and has been running for 8 years now, as well as the popular Zeltik festival. Jules Holland and James Taylor performed here. The Mark Copeland Quartet is playing later this year.
