On 10 March 2025, Luxembourg officially unveiled the next phase of its national AI project - the installation and launch of the MeluXina-AI supercomputer and the creation of the associated AI Factory. This event solidifies the country's ambitions to become a European-level technology hub.

The initiative was unveiled by Minister of Economy, SMEs, Energy and Tourism Lex Delles and Minister of Digitalisation and Higher Education Stéphanie Obertin - just a few months after the initial announcement of the AI Factory in December 2024.

The project will place Luxembourg among seven key European AI factories, alongside Barcelona, Bologna, Kajaani, Linköping, Stuttgart and Athens. MeluXina-AI will be operated by LuxProvide, which already operates the existing MeluXina supercomputer and is also responsible for the future MeluXina-Q quantum computer.

Other key institutions in the country are also involved in the development: the National Data Service, the University of Luxembourg and the Institute of Science and Technology (LIST). They form a technological consortium that:

  • provides digital sovereignty in high-intensity computing;
  • promotes the formation of a modern AI ecosystem capable of attracting investments, startups and specialised specialists;
  • strengthens European co-operation within the framework of EuroHPC initiatives.

The supercomputer will be located in LuxConnect's data centres in Bissen and Bettembourg. Half of its capacity will be dedicated to the EuroHPC European network and the other half to Luxembourg's scientific, commercial and educational needs.

The state's total contribution to the project will be €60 million - this is not only an investment in technology, but also a political signal: AI is seen as a cornerstone of the future economy. Luxembourg is betting on an infrastructure that will give it a significant place on the map of digital Europe.
