Following the accident at the Müden lock on the Moselle River on 8 December 2024, which brought shipping to a standstill, the Luxembourg Ministry of Mobility and Public Works has taken emergency measures. Minister Juriko Backes issued a decree temporarily allowing lorry traffic on Sundays, holidays and the day before.

This measure aims to mitigate the impact on supply chains that rely on combined water and land transport. It will ensure that necessary goods can be delivered before the gateway is reinstated.

Conditions and duration

  • The permit is only valid for trucks involved in accident response.
  • The initial validity period is three months.
  • The Regulation shall enter into force immediately upon publication in the Official Journal of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

According to government statements, this measure will help compensate for the disruptions caused by the accident and maintain the stability of the logistics network, especially during the winter period when demand for key goods increases.
