Luxembourg's Findel Airport is set to undergo a major renovation, just four years after a costly runway reconstruction. The €150 million modernisation project has not lived up to expectations: the technical condition of the runway does not meet the required operational standards.

However, according to Mobility Minister Yuriko Backes, passengers will not feel any additional costs. In her response to a parliamentary enquiry from ADR MP Jeff Engelen, the minister explained that all inspection and repair costs will be borne entirely by the airport operator, lux-Airport. This means that the fee structure will remain unchanged and ticket prices will not increase.

In addition, lux-Airport is already considering legal action against the contractors and engineering companies involved in the project. It may be possible to prove their responsibility for violations or poor quality of work.

Baсkes emphasises that the responsibility for the project lies solely with lux-Airport; it was this structure that concluded the contracts and controlled the execution. This is not only a demonstration of the principle of accountability, but also a way to protect the interests of the state and passengers without additional budget expenditures.

The question remains open as to what defects were identified on the runway and to what extent they affected flight safety and schedules. However, the authorities assure that the functioning of the airport will not be jeopardised and all necessary measures will be taken without delay.
