Record year for CFL: over 31 million passengers
In 2024, the Luxembourg railway company CFL (Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois) transported a record 31.3 million passengers, up 10 per cent on 2023 (28.7 million). This growth confirms the attractiveness of the company's services and the important role of rail transport in Luxembourg's public transport system.
Passenger numbers have more than doubled since 2005, when they totalled 14.1 million. The Luxembourg-Esch-Rodange line remains the busiest with 9.9 million passengers (+8.78%). It is followed by:
- Luxembourg-Ettelbruck-Troisvierges-Gouvy line (Luxembourg-Ettelbruck-Troisvierges-Gouvy): 6.8 million passengers (+17.24%);
- Luxembourg-Thionville-Metz line (Luxembourg-Thionville-Metz): 5.9 million passengers (+4.26%).
The Luxembourg-Wasserbillig-Trier line recorded the strongest passenger growth at 18 per cent, although it remains the least busy with 2.5 million passengers.
CFL CEO Marc Wengler said this success was the result of the efforts of the company's more than 5,000 employees. He emphasised that trains remain one of the most environmentally friendly modes of transport. CFL is committed to maintaining its "first choice" status for customers through integrated mobility solutions.
The growing popularity of CFL trains underlines their importance for a sustainable transport system in Luxembourg. The company plans to continue to develop intermodal and environmentally oriented solutions, contributing to passenger traffic growth and improving the country's transport infrastructure.
