Luxembourg favours simplification of the Common Agricultural Policy
On 27 January 2025, the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council met in Brussels and was chaired by Polish Minister of Agriculture Czesław Siekierski. Luxembourg's Minister of Agriculture, Food and Wine, Martine Hansen, spoke demanding simplification of the European agricultural policy (PAC), protection of food sovereignty and increased competitiveness of farmers.
The Minister emphasised that over-regulation hinders the work of farmers by overburdening them with administrative obligations. She suggested revising the inspection system and making the policy more flexible in order to better adapt it to the realities of agriculture.
Luxembourg raised the issue of banning phytopharmaceutical residues on imported products. The initiative was supported by Austria, Bulgaria, Spain, France, Lithuania, and Slovenia.
"If a substance is recognised as harmful and banned in the EU, it should not be present in imported products. This is a matter of protecting the health of consumers and our farmers," said Martin Hansen.
Luxembourg continues to push for reforms that will allow local farmers to remain competitive while protecting product quality and consumer health.
