Luxembourg has lifted its water restrictions

On Friday, the Water Management Authority (AGE) officially announced the lifting of the state of heightened alert regarding water supply. This measure had been introduced on 13 July against a backdrop of a prolonged heatwave, a lack of rainfall and a sharp rise in consumption. Officials from the agency emphasised that the reduction in consumption recorded in recent days had eased the strain on the infrastructure and stabilised available reserves, thereby ensuring an uninterrupted supply to the public.

However, despite the improvement in drinking water supplies, water levels in natural watercourses remain critically low. Rivers were severely affected by the drought in July and August, with the result that aquatic ecosystems remain highly vulnerable. Consequently, the authorities have maintained a strict ban on water abstraction from surface sources until further notice. The only exception is the River Moselle, the use of whose resources is governed by specific regulations.

At the same time, the regulatory authority emphasised that the lifting of emergency measures does not negate the need for a responsible approach to water resources. The Water Management Department expressed its official gratitude to citizens, local authorities, relevant enterprises and water supply associations for their collective efforts to conserve drinking water, which have been underway since the second half of July.
