The Minister of Culture, Eric Thill, has officially announced the launch of a new cultural tradition: on 26 September 2025, Luxembourg's National Language Day will be held for the first time in the country. The date was not chosen by chance - it coincides with the European Day of Languages, highlighting Luxembourg's role as a multilingual society in the heart of Europe.

The creation of this holiday is foreseen in measure 38 of the government's "Action Plan for the Promotion of the Luxembourgish Language", approved by the Cabinet of Ministers back in December 2022. The aim of the initiative is to strengthen the position of Lëtzebuergesch as a living language that is actively used in society, education, culture and science.

"Language is not just a means of communication. It is a bridge, it is a binding force," the minister emphasised at a press conference. He said the Luxembourgish language reflects the country's historical roots and strengthens its identity in an open, multilingual and international society.

In the first year, celebrations are planned across the country:

  • conferences and round tables;
  • concerts and theatre workshops;
  • language exhibitions;
  • educational projects and events for schoolchildren and students.

The Ministry of Culture is already calling on all interested individuals and organisations to propose projects and ideas for the next celebration, which will take place in 2026. Both institutions and individuals can take part. The aim is to turn Luxembourg Language Day into a sustainable national tradition in which the whole of society will be involved.
