Luxembourg’s mayors became waiters for the evening

As part of Mayor’s Day, which is traditionally held at the Schueberfouer fair in Luxembourg City, 54 mayors swapped their official duties for roles in the service sector. The politicians donned aprons and acted as waiters, serving food and drinks to guests at the fairground’s food stalls. The main aim of this initiative was to raise funds for charitable causes.

That said, learning a new trade did not go smoothly for everyone. For instance, Fred Ternes, mayor of the commune of Niederanven, jokingly recounted how he was left standing there with a plate of fillet after realising that no one was sitting at the right table. For his part, Luxembourg’s Minister for the Economy, Lex Delles, who was attending the event as a guest, noted that past experience had taught him to be prepared for any mishaps whilst serving. According to the official, he had been prudent enough not to wear freshly laundered trousers, so as to avoid any trouble from spilled drinks or food.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of Luxembourg City, Lydie Polfer, confidently served up dishes and posed for photographs, drawing on her many years’ experience of taking part in the event. For her, this year’s event took on a special personal significance due to the absence of the recently deceased Colette Flesch — the first female mayor of the Luxembourg capital. Lydie Polfer emphasised that for many years they had traditionally attended the fair together with her former colleague and mutual friends, so she intends to continue this tradition in her memory.
