Luxembourg is embarking on a major redevelopment of one of the city's most popular playgrounds, Merl Park. Mayor Lydie Polfer and Alderman Maurice Bauer presented the final design on 26 August, which promises to transform a familiar play space into an innovative area for children and adults. Construction work will start on 15 September.
The project is built on three principles - inclusivity, sustainability and innovation. The centrepiece will be a 900 m² water play area with fountains, pumps, ramps and areas for sand and barefoot play. The barrier-free concept will allow children of different ages and abilities to play together, developing not only physical activity but also social skills.
The visual symbol of the site will be two towers stylised as a hydroelectric power station and a wind turbine. Connected by rope bridges and safe passages, they will offer children rope mazes, sensory games and exciting tasks. In this way, the play space will also become an educational area that introduces renewable energy sources.
The old favourites - the famous Merl Park long slides - will remain in place and will be integrated into the new structure. Nearby, there will be climbing areas, suspended walkways, swings of various types, including inclusive models, and large shaded play areas under canopies.
The project promises to maintain a cosy atmosphere while breathing new content into the park, which combines classic entertainment with ideas for a sustainable future. For Luxembourg, this is a step towards creating an urban environment where play becomes a way of learning and nature becomes part of everyday leisure.
