2024 was the rainiest year ever recorded in Luxembourg
According to the AgriMeteo meteorological service, 2024 was the rainiest year on record since measurements began in 1854. The average annual rainfall was 1,195.7 mm, which is 42.6 per cent above normal (838.4 mm). The highest precipitation was recorded at the Arsdorf station with 1463.5 mm and the lowest at Remich (952.7 mm).
In addition, 140 rainy days with more than 1 mm of precipitation (+14 days above normal) and 35 days with more than 10 mm (+11 days) were recorded during the year. The exceptions were November and December, when precipitation was below average.
The abundance of rainfall during the year seriously affected the agricultural sector. Planting and harvesting were delayed, and even the harvesting of cereal crops took place between rainstorms. As a result, the cereal harvest was disappointing.
At the same time, fodder crops yielded above average, although overwatered soils made drying and harvesting difficult. The maize crop was of good quality, but rainy weather delayed its maturation and harvesting. In contrast, potatoes performed well due to the absence of drought.
Winegrowers faced late frosts in April and outbreaks of fungal diseases, which reduced harvest volumes. However, despite this, the quality of the grapes harvested was at a high level and "bright and interesting" wines are expected.
The average annual temperature in 2024 was 10.6°C, 0.7°C above the norm for the period 1991-2020. The year was among the ten warmest in the history of observations. In particular:
- Winter: 4.2°C (+1.6°C) - 7th warmest winter on record;
- Spring: 10.4°C (+0.8°C) - 5th warmest spring on record;
- Summer: 17.7°C (+0.1°C);
- Autumn: 10.8°C (+0.9°C).
Since 2004, all the warmest years in Luxembourg have been in the last two decades, demonstrating a global warming trend.
