Exacerbation of the respiratory infection season in Luxembourg
The weekly report of the Luxembourg Ministry of Health shows an increase in cases of respiratory diseases. Influenza and COVID-19 lead the way, while cases of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection have decreased.
The number of reported cases of influenza rose from 561 to 746 during the week, an increase of 33 per cent. Among the cases, 83 per cent were influenza virus type A and 17 per cent influenza type B.
Typing of influenza A showed that 60% of cases were caused by the A(H3) strain and 40% by A(H1)pdm9. The Ministry of Health recalls the possibility of vaccination to prevent complications and the spread of the virus.
To reduce the risk of infection, it is recommended:
- Wash hands regularly with soap and water for at least 30 seconds.
- When coughing and sneezing, cover mouth and nose with a handkerchief or elbow bend.
- Use disposable handkerchiefs and throw them away immediately.
- Avoid handshakes, hugs and attending public events.
- Ventilate the premises regularly.
- Staying home when you show signs of illness.
The number of RSV cases decreased by 13%, from 192 to 168 confirmed cases. This is a positive trend, given that RSV is one of the leading causes of hospitalisations among young children and the elderly.
The number of positive tests for COVID-19 increased from 55 to 65 cases during the week. The latest data on coronavirus variants show that two sub-variants of JN.1 were prevalent in November 2024: XEC (46.5%) and KP.3 (40.2%). Authorities continue to monitor their spread and urge citizens to take precautions.
