The Luxembourg Ministry of Environment, Climate and Biodiversity, together with the Bridges and Roads Administration, the police and the Haute-Sûre Park, has launched a long-term operation to remove abandoned fishing boats from the Lultzhausen reservoir. So far, 34 boats have been recorded as being in a wrecked or dilapidated state.

Lake Haute-Sûre is not just one of Luxembourg's most picturesque spots, attracting tourists and nature lovers. It is a key reservoir of drinking water for the country, as well as an area of active recreation: from water sports to hiking trails.

However, the long-term lack of maintenance of abandoned boats has led to real threats: environmental, technical and sanitary. Decaying hulls, possible fuel or oil leaks, dangerous objects - all this makes them hazardous for both the environment and holidaymakers.

The authorities have started sending official notices to the owners of the boats that have been identified, providing information on the options for a solution - including voluntary removal. In case the owner is not identified, the boats will be seized and disposed of by decision of the administration.

The operation at Lulzhausen will be just the beginning: in the coming years, it is planned to extend similar measures to other parts of Lake Haute-Sûre in order to ensure safety and preserve the natural value of the region.
