Health and Social Protection Minister Martine Deprez has explained who is recommended to be vaccinated against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and how it will be organised.

According to the High Council for Communicable Diseases (CSMI), vaccination can be offered on a case-by-case basis to people 75 and older, especially those living in nursing homes, as well as those 65 and older with chronic conditions such as respiratory disease, heart failure, cancer or immunodeficiency.

At the moment, the CNS does not cover the cost of the vaccine, as in Luxembourg vaccines are provided free of charge by the State as part of the national immunisation programme. However, vaccine stocks are now limited and are used exclusively for pregnant women to protect newborns in the first months of life.

Following the December 2024 CSMI recommendation, the Ministry of Health plans to procure additional doses, but their supply is dependent on government tender procedures. As a result, vaccination for the elderly will not be available until winter 2025.
