Influenza cases continue to decline in Luxembourg. According to the Directorate of Health, between 17 and 23 February 2025 (week 8), the number of reported cases of influenza decreased by 28% compared to the previous week, falling from 1,630 to 1,166 cases. This is the third consecutive week with a downward trend, confirming the passing of the epidemic peak. However, the virus remains active, especially among children, who continue to make up a significant proportion of those who fall ill.

Analysis of influenza virus subtypes showed that 38% of cases were influenza A and 62% were influenza B. Among influenza A viruses, subtypes A(H3) (55.9 per cent) and A(H1)pdm9 (44.1 per cent) dominate. This epidemiological situation requires the continuation of precautionary measures, especially in children's institutions and among immunocompromised people.

The incidence of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is also decreasing. During the reporting period, 127 confirmed cases were reported, down 27% from the previous week (174 cases). Infants and elderly people over 80 years of age remain the most vulnerable. Doctors advise parents to be especially cautious as RSV can cause severe respiratory illnesses in young children, including bronchiolitis and pneumonia.

The incidence of COVID-19 in Luxembourg is also decreasing. The number of confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection has decreased from 55 to 42, a decrease of 24% compared to the previous week. Analysis of wastewater confirms this trend, showing a decrease in the concentration of the virus in the environment.

The latest virus sequencing data show that two JN.1 sub-variants, XEC (47.7%) and KP.3 (22.1%), were dominant in January 2025. These sub-variants continue to circulate in the region, but the data suggest a decline in their activity.
