A fire broke out at Uerschterhaff prison in Luxembourg
In the evening of 10 January, at around 18:30, a fire broke out on the territory of the Uerschterhaff Penitentiary Centre. Thanks to the prompt actions of the institution's staff, the fire was extinguished as soon as possible. No inmates were injured, but three staff members were sent for preventive medical examinations.
Representatives of the prison authorities and police officers arrived at the scene. According to the protocol, the management of the Department of Correctional Services and the Ombudsman, who acts as the external controller of places of deprivation of liberty, were immediately notified of the incident. The Police Forensic Service also arrived on the scene to carry out a detailed investigation.
The exact causes of the fire are still unknown. The investigation is looking into all leads to determine what exactly caused the fire. Such incidents raise questions about security and risk management in places of detention, but the quick response of staff emphasised the effectiveness of the institution's security system.
