A targeted speed control operation took place on Tuesday morning on the A4 motorway near an active construction zone. Luxembourg police recorded an alarming level of violations: in just two hours - between 10:45 and 12:40 - 16 fines were issued for speeding more than 25 kilometres per hour. This, it should be recalled, automatically means a fine of 145 euros and minus 2 points on a driver's record.
But in seven cases, the situation was much more serious: the drivers had driven 114 km/h or more - more than 60 per cent over the limit. In such cases, Luxembourg law provides for the immediate revocation of the driver's licence. This is exactly what happened: the police seized the driving licences on the spot.
The place of inspection is a construction zone on the A4, where a temporary limit of 70 km/h is in force. Speed violations in such areas are particularly dangerous: narrowed lanes, working machinery, people near the motorway - all this increases the risk of serious accidents.
Additionally, seven drivers were fined for speeding between 110-113 km/h. This offence did not result in immediate deprivation of licence, but also resulted in fines and deduction of points.
Separately, another type of dangerous behaviour was also recorded: one driver used a mobile phone while driving and received a fine of €250 and minus 4 points.
