How to avoid becoming a victim of fake police officers in Luxembourg

Fraudsters in Luxembourg are increasingly resorting to a scheme where they pose as police officers to lure citizens into revealing their personal data and stealing their valuables. According to the real police, such scams have become more frequent in recent weeks.
The scam begins with a phone call or WhatsApp message: the victim is told that they have allegedly been the target of cyber fraud. They are then persuaded to click on a link and enter their LuxTrust details, which are the key to online access to their bank accounts. Once they have gained control of the accounts, the fraudsters ask the next question: do you have any cash or valuables at home? If so, the victim is told that a 'police officer' will come to collect them 'for safekeeping'.
In response to a wave of similar incidents, the Luxembourg police have issued a reminder of a number of signs that distinguish a genuine officer from an impostor. Firstly, all police officers are required to speak Luxembourgish and can present their service ID at any time. Secondly, there are clear regulations regarding uniforms: a uniform cap, vest, radio, badge, handcuffs, baton, pepper spray and firearm are all part of the standard equipment.
The police have published photographs and diagrams showing the details of the uniform so that citizens can compare the appearance of suspected officers with the actual standards. In case of the slightest doubt, the authorities strongly recommend calling 113, which is the official channel for verifying the identity of police officers or calling real law enforcement officers.
