As the festive season approaches, the Luxembourg police are stepping up traffic control. On the night of Saturday to Sunday, on behalf of the public prosecutor's office, extensive alcohol checks were carried out in two localities - on the Rue de Wilwerdange in Troisvierges and on the main road in Hosingen. The inspection involved 285 vehicles - not only suspicious drivers but also those who showed no signs of intoxication were stopped.

As a result, seven drivers were found to be driving drunk. Four of them received protocols, three of them were fined on the spot. These figures indicate about 2.5 per cent of the offenders among those checked, which is quite high for one night. This emphasises how serious the problem of drunk driving remains, even in small communities.

But alcohol was not the only thing that caught the attention of the police. One driver failed to produce a valid driving licence and another driver was found to have a tax sticker that had been expired for more than 60 days, for which he received a €250 fine. Such an offence indicates a systematic disregard for administrative requirements, which, according to the police, can be just as dangerous as speeding or drinking while driving.

There were also two cases of penalty point deductions: one driver received a deduction for an unregistered car, the other for technical changes that did not comply with the norms.
