Parking in Luxembourg is widely accessible to drivers throughout the country at various costs. However, when a car needs to be parked for more than two or three hours, the question arises whether there are any options for more favorable as well as convenient long-term parking.

Day-long parking with park-and-ride and purple zones in Luxembourg City

Parking on the streets of Luxembourg, especially in its bustling capital, is no walk-in the park as the demand for parking spots usually exceeds the available spaces. Different parking zones come with varying functions and rates, purple zones are designed for long-term parking, they have lower prices and constitute one of the available options for long-term parking.

When it comes to day-long parking in Luxembourg City, two prominent options stand out:

  • street parking in Luxembourg City
  • Park-and-Ride outside the City.

The P&R system encourages drivers to leave their cars outside the city and make use of public transportation, making it not only a sustainable but also a practical option for extended parking needs.

Purple zones: 10-hour parking limit

Parking in the streets of Luxembourg operates on a regulated schedule. On weekdays, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and even on Saturdays during the same hours, parking is subject to fees. However, on Sundays and public holidays, you can enjoy free parking.

Luxembourg City employs a color-coded system to distinguish between various parking zones, each indicating the maximum allowable parking duration and associated rates.

Zone and Hourly Fee
ZoneMaximum DurationHourly Fee (euros)
🟠 Orange2 hours2
🟡 Yellow3 to 5 hours for roadside parking, and 5 to 10 hours in car parks1
🟢 Green5 hours2 for the first 3 hours, then 1.5
🟣 Purple10 hours0.5

For long-duration parking lasting several hours but not exceeding a day, the Purple Zone presents an attractive option. Parking for up to 10 hours costs a mere 5 euros. However, keep in mind that finding a Purple Zone may not always be easy, and you must adhere to the 10-hour limit.

Park-and-ride: 24-hour free parking limit

Park-and-Ride (P+R) facilities in Luxembourg City are strategically positioned on the outskirts, aiming to encourage motorists to leave their cars beyond the city limits and make use of the free public transportation system. This option can be particularly cost-effective and appealing for those in need of parking for several hours or even multiple days.

P+R parking is entirely free for the first 24 hours. However, starting from the 25th hour, a daily fee of 10 euros is applied for each day commenced. These P+R lots are strategically located and boast excellent bus and tram connections, ensuring a seamless transition to the city center.

Here are the Park and Ride options available in Luxembourg City, which you can also locate on an interactive map on the official dedicated website:

For those residing on the outskirts of Luxembourg City and commuting to the center, this can be an enticing alternative. Rather than grappling with costly city-center parking while at work, you can park for free on the outskirts, commute to your workplace via the free public transportation system, and then return to your vehicle for the journey home.

However, it's worth noting that the availability and convenience of P+R facilities can vary depending on your location and destination.

Purple zones vs Park-and-ride

When it comes to extended parking needs, the choices in Luxembourg City extend to both Purple Zones and Park-and-Ride facilities. These options each have their own set of advantages and disadvantages that cater to different preferences and circumstances.

Long-term parking for residents

If you're a resident of Luxembourg City, you can enjoy the benefits of a residential parking vignette. It grants the privilege of parking free of charge and without time restrictions within their residential neighborhood. To utilize this vignette, it should be placed behind your vehicle's windshield, ensuring visibility from the exterior.

Parking vignette

Obtaining a residential parking vignette requires substantiation through a residence certificate issued by the City of Luxembourg and a vehicle registration certificate in the applicant's name.

The parking vignette is exclusively reserved for inhabitants of the capital.

These parking vignettes are assigned on a per-person and per-vehicle basis. They also come in three different types: annual, provisional, and visitor vignettes.

Annual

These permits are valid for 12 months. The first year's issuance is free of charge, the second year costs 60 euros, and the third year is 120 euros. Each person can acquire a maximum of three subsequent annual parking vignettes.

Provisional

A temporary vignette is necessary until the annual vignette is granted. These provisional vignettes are valid for 20 days and have to be requested prior.

Visitor

These vignettes are intended for use by visitors staying in a resident's home for an extended period due to family reasons. They cost 16 euros each.A maximum of three visitor vignettes can be obtained annually. The duration of a visitor vignette cannot exceed 3 months, but this period can be divided into several stay periods.

How to obtain a vignette for long-term residential parking?

The process of obtaining one or more residential parking vignettes is straightforward, ensuring that residents of Luxembourg City can access this valuable privilege with ease. Here's a step-by-step guide.
