Minister of Education, Children and Youth Claude Meisch and Minister of Transport and Public Works Yuriko Backes, in a joint response to a parliamentary enquiry by MPs Francine Closener and Ben Polidori, outlined the reasons for the temporary closure of the upper floors of the Lycée Robert-Schuman (LRSL) and the measures taken to ensure the continuation of the educational process.
During the repair works, experts found that a number of construction elements of the building did not meet modern requirements. At the same time, the structure of the building itself was recognised as reliable, except for some concrete slabs. In the interests of the safety of students and teachers, it was decided to temporarily close the upper floors of the lyceum. The ground floor remains in operation due to the stabilisation works carried out.
After the school holidays, classes were moved to the premises of the Institut national des langues Luxembourg (INLL), thus avoiding any interruption to the educational process.
The government states that the inner courtyard of the school will be converted into temporary modular classrooms before the start of the school year in autumn 2025. This decision will allow the lyceum to continue functioning even during long and labour-intensive renovation works.
In response to the criticism about the alleged lack of awareness of the participants in the process, the ministers noted that the Lyceum's management (LRSL) was involved in the discussion of the situation from the very beginning and jointly participated in the search for solutions. In addition, an official press release was issued on 12 February, informing the public about the details of what was happening.
