Eich, nestled in the northeast of Luxembourg City, is bordered by Beggen to the north, Dommeldange and Weimerskirch to the east, Pfaffenthal and Limpertsberg to the south, and Mühlenbach to the west. Despite being one of the smallest neighborhoods in the Luxembourg capital, Eich stands as a testament to the nation's industrial history, akin to Dommeldange.

With a charming village-like atmosphere, Eich boasts pleasant streets, though the main thoroughfare contends with bustling traffic. Notably, a significant portion of the northern landscape is occupied by Arcelor Mittal's industrial complex.

Population of the neighborhood

Although not expansive in size, encompassing only 63.18 hectares, the neighborhood maintains a noteworthy density of 46.8 persons per hectare.

Transport accessibility

Nestled beside one of the city's major thoroughfares, Eich offers excellent transport accessibility, ensuring swift connections to the city center and the Kirchberg business district.

Let's explore the various modes of transportation available, each catering to different preferences and needs:

By car
Eich's proximity to a major city artery allows for a quick 5-minute drive to the city center and a mere 10-minute commute to the Kirchberg business district. The neighborhood provides the convenience of five outdoor parking facilities, all conveniently located near the Q8 gas station.
By bus
Despite its small size, Eich boasts an extensive bus network, with 12 bus lines connecting various points in the city, including lines 3, 4, 10, 11, 21, 23, 26, 30, 32, 33, CN5, and CN6. A journey to the city center takes only 10 to 15 minutes, while reaching Kirchberg takes slightly longer, ranging from 20 to 30 minutes.
By bicycle
Cycling emerges as a highly efficient alternative for commuting to and from Eich. A quick 5 to 10-minute ride takes you to the city center, while reaching Kirchberg requires 15 to 20 minutes, depending on your destination. While there are no Veloh self-service stations in the neighborhood, two stations in Dommeldange and Weimerskirch are conveniently close.
By foot
While not the most convenient option, walking is feasible, taking up to half an hour to reach the city center.
By train
Notably, Eich enjoys the advantage of having a train station nearby, technically located in Dommeldange. However, the station is merely a stone's throw away, greatly facilitating mobility for those needing to travel beyond the capital.

Infrastructure of the neighborhood

In spite of its small size, the Eich neighborhood stands out for its limited infrastructure in cultural, sports, and commercial domains. The compact nature means a scarcity of amenities, exemplified by a sole Shop & Go near a gas station, suitable for last-minute needs rather than comprehensive shopping. Notably, Eich hosts significant facilities like the CHL Eich Hospital Center and unique structures such as the Tibetan Cultural Center of Luxembourg, adding distinctive elements to this otherwise modest neighborhood.

Pros and cons of living in Eich

The Eich neighborhood provides a pleasant residential and family-friendly environment in certain areas, and its proximity to the Kirchberg business district makes it particularly appealing for professionals. The presence of the Dommeldange railway station facilitates commuting for those working outside the city.

However, on the downside, Eich contends with heavy traffic, especially during peak hours, as its main artery serves as a crucial route to the northern regions of the country. Another drawback is the lack of diverse infrastructures in cultural and commercial realms. Given its compact size, Eich has limited options, with only a small Shop & Go next to a gas station for last-minute essentials. For more extensive grocery shopping, residents often need to explore supermarkets in adjacent neighborhoods.

Pros and cons
Great for families and working people, as it is close to the Kirchberg and provides all necessary facilities
Easy accsess to the public transportation and variety of options for transport modes
Has various educational institutions for all levels of schooling, except for universities
Heavy traffic, especially during busy hours may be a disappointing point
Not easily accsessible by walking, it takes an hour to walk from the center, so if you do not own a car, it might be not great
The neighborhood lacks  commercial infrastructure and has to rely on the other districts around

Historical overview

Among Luxembourg's regions, Dommeldange and Eich proudly harbor the oldest metallurgical tradition. Four centuries ago, a flourishing forge set root here, serving as a model for subsequent steelworks throughout Luxembourg.

Mettalurgical region

After the French Revolution, Haff Eech transformed into the independent municipality of Eich, comprising six sections: Eich, Beggen, Dommeldange, Weimerskirch, Neudorf, and until 1849, Rollingergrund. On March 27, 1920, Eich was amalgamated into the city of Luxembourg.

Metzs

In 1845, Auguste Metz, the founder of Eich's steel industry, erected the first coke and coal blast furnace. A second blast furnace was ignited in 1847, and a third, designed exclusively for coke burning, joined in 1858. By then, annual iron production had soared to 14,500 tons. The production of cast iron endured until 1966, ceasing the crafting of cast iron objects in 1975. In 1873, an orphanage, hospice, and school were established, predecessors to today's Norbert Metz Foundation and the Eich Clinic. The Emile Metz Institute, founded in 1915 as a training center for the steel industry, has evolved into a private technical school.
