Four-day workweek back in the spotlight

On the website of the Chamber of Deputies, you can now vote for this initiative. It is assumed that the working days will be nine hours, that is, the working time will be reduced to thirty six hours in total. In addition, during this four-day workweek, only two days will remain purely office days, and two days are reserved for remote work.

The authors of the petition insist that the four-day workweek will bring tangible benefits to the Grand Duchy:

  • CO2 emissions will drop drastically as most people will travel to work two days a week.
  • purchasing power will increase because people will spend less on fuel while keeping the same salary;
  • traffic on routes within the country will be reduced;
  • Luxembourg will become more attractive for new workers;
  • leisure-oriented economy sectors will grow, as people will have one more free day a week to use these services.

The petition specifically addresses the current economic and environmental situation, emphasizing that both the economy and the environment are rapidly deteriorating. The nine-hour, four-day week is an opportunity to urgently improve the lives of the lowest income earners as well as the middle class. In essence, the new mode of operation is needed for most people to maintain a good standard of living or improve it.

If the initiative gains the required 4500 signatures, it is submitted for discussion to the parliament. You can vote for this or that initiative, as always, on the official website.
