Luxembourg leads in number of persons employed in general cleaning of buildings

According to the latest data from the European Commission, about 3 million people worked in the general cleaning sector in 220 thousand companies in 2020.

The number of employees in the sector is 2.3% of the total number of employees. This indicator ranks 4th in the EU. Only catering and delivering, trucking, and temporary work agencies have more employees. In addition, Luxembourg employs more cleaners than most EU countries — 3.1%. Belgium (3.9%), Spain (3.8%) and France (3.4%) are at the same level.

The activity "general cleaning of buildings" includes the non-specialized cleaning of all types of buildings. Offices, houses or apartments, factories, shops, and other commercial and professional premises are included in this category. It is mostly concerned with interior cleaning. However, it may also include the cleaning of outdoor areas.

This section of the economy does not include specialized cleaning methods, such as window cleaning using climbing equipment.
