In 2023, 868,700 people in the European Union were employed in professions related to the creation and processing of text: writers, journalists or linguists. This is 2.5 per cent less than in 2022, indicating a general decline in the industry.

Germany employs the most specialists in these fields - 237,600 people. This is followed by France (92,800), Spain (74,200), Italy (72,300) and Poland (69,600).

Against the background of the overall reduction, Luxembourg stands out, where the number of such workers grew by an impressive 67.5% over the year. Latvia (+43.1%) and Lithuania (+22.9%) showed similar dynamics.

At the other end of the ranking are Cyprus, Portugal and Slovenia, where the number of members of these professions fell by 28.4 per cent, 27.4 per cent and 23.4 per cent respectively.

In addition, there are 76,328 companies involved in publishing books and periodicals in the EU. Almost a third of them are located in France (23,648), making the country the leader in the number of publishers. This is followed by Spain, Germany, the Czech Republic and Italy.

Despite digital transformation and growing competition from AI, word-related professions remain resilient and, in some countries, even promising. The rapid growth in Luxembourg may indicate either a re-evaluation of the cultural industry or a broader migration of professionals into content and communication.
