Amazon to fire 18 000 employees. Will this affect Luxembourg?

Last November, Amazon announced that it would cut 10 000 jobs across the world. However, new data came in this Thursday. Now it seems that 18 000 people will be left jobless.

According to representatives of the service, this is due to the difficult economic situation and excessive "bloat" within the company. Most of the cuts will affect Amazon stores and PXT organizations. Although no specific numbers have been given by country, it is to be expected that Luxembourg will also be affected.

Right now the European Amazon headquarters is located in the Grand Duchy, to which 2% of all Amazon employees are assigned. This is about 200 000 people. At the end of 2022, some employees were already denied the extension of fixed-term contracts. Some of them only worked for a few months before this.

Amazon is one of the largest employers in Luxembourg. Over the past year, the number of its employees in the country has grown by 10%. Now the company is offering to mitigate the consequences as much as possible with severance pay, assistance in finding employment abroad and medical insurance.
