Fruit picking allowed for free from trees marked with a yellow ribbon
The Yellow Ribbon (Gielt Band) campaign starts in Luxembourg. Municipalities, businesses and residents of the Grand Duchy can order a yellow ribbon online and hang it on their fruit tree. This will mean that in September any passer-by can pick ripe fruit from this tree.
It is generally illegal to pick fruit from private trees in Luxembourg. But with the help of yellow ribbons, the Ministry of Agriculture is trying to fight an overabundance of fruit not picked by the tree owners. Most often, these simply overripen, fall beneath the trees and begin to rot.
Many cities of the Grand Duchy have already joined this measure. Kayl, Bettembourg, Bertrange, and Mondorf-les-Bains — each of these cities already ordered more than 200 yellow ribbons. So the next time you walk through the city streets, take a closer look at the trees. And let your day diversify juicy ripe fruit.
Earlier, picking apples, pears, cherries, plums and other fruit and berries was allowed by numerous municipal gardens in Luxembourg.
