Luxembourg defends freedom of movement in the Schengen area
On 6 December, Luxembourg's Interior Minister Leon Gloden met with European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner in Schengen. The meeting provided a platform to discuss key issues: the implementation of the Migration and Asylum Pact, strengthening borders and the EU's new internal security strategy.
Leon Gloden emphasised the importance of freedom of movement for the successful functioning of the EU. "We must work together to make internal border checks a thing of the past," the Minister said, recalling the importance of the Schengen area.
Magnus Brunner added: "Schengen is an example of what the EU can achieve. With the expansion to 29 states and 450 million citizens, Schengen is the largest borderless area in the world."
The visit included the first meeting of the new European Commission with young people at the Schengen Lyceum in Perl. The dialogue aims to engage the new generation in discussing key European issues.
