The Luxembourg government has adopted measures aimed at supporting local producers and reducing food waste at official events. The new initiative is in line with sustainable development goals and aims not only to improve the use of resources, but also to create a model of responsible consumption that the whole country can follow.

Minister of Agriculture, Food and Viticulture Martine Hansen said that public institutions should play a leading role in changing consumer habits. Supporting regional production and reducing food waste are not just recommendations, but concrete steps towards a responsible future, she said.

Among the measures taken is the mandatory use of regional products on the menu at all official events and receptions. This will strengthen local agriculture, winemaking and horticulture and increase demand for products from Luxembourg farmers.

To minimise the amount of food thrown away, event organisers will calculate the amount of food required in advance and redistribute or recycle surpluses. In addition, the government intends to actively promote these practices through information campaigns and official statements, emphasising the importance of reducing food waste and supporting local producers.
