Luxembourg to hold several events on World Diabetes Day

World Diabetes Day is held annually on November 14. This is the date when people are further informed about the causes and dangers of this disease. Patients are reminded of their rights and opportunities. In Luxembourg, more than 30 000 people have this disease. It is important that they all have access to effective care systems and that they are well informed and able to take care of themselves. Several events were and will be held to commemorate the day.

A solidarity march «10 000 steps against diabetes» was organised by the Luxembourg Association of Diabetes (ALD) in collaboration with the Fédération Luxembourgeoise de Marche Populaire FLMP, last Saturday, November 12, at Hosingen.

The minister of Health will participate in the «5 voices that speak of diabetes» lecture evening on November 14 at La Coque (2, rue Léon Hengen L-1745 Luxembourg).

On November 14 several hospitals will also run information sessions on diabetes:

  • The Kirchberg Hospital (11: 00 to 14: 00)
  • The Centre Hospitalier Emile Mayrisch (CHEM) in Esch-sur-Alzette (8: 00 to 16: 00)
  • Centre Hospitalier du Nord (CHdN) in Ettelbruck (10: 00 to 16: 00)

There are several types of diabetes and the spectrum of its distribution is extremely high. While type 1 diabetes, which is considered an autoimmune disease, cannot be dealt with, then type 2 diabetes can be dealt with by controlling your lifestyle. Most often, the second type is associated with overweight and malnutrition.

To prevent diabetes, follow these simple guidelines:

  • Keep track of your body mass index (BMI), which should not exceed 25 in adults.
  • Practice regular physical activity, move more daily
  • Eat healthier, consume fewer food items high in fat and sugar, especially sugary drinks and sodas.
  • Check with your doctor if in doubt.
