Luxembourg wants more foreigners to vote

Municipal elections are approaching, and the capital is very much interested in attracting foreigners to vote. This is also in the interests of foreigners themselves, since they represent the vast majority of the country’s population, and decisions made at the municipal level directly affect the social and political life of society.

Adding interest is the fact that now any person living in the territory of the Grand Duchy can vote and run for office. To do this, it’s enough to register in a commune and add your name to the voting lists no later than 55 days before the election date.

Previously, to obtain the right to vote, it was necessary to live in the country for 5 years. Now, registration is enough, but the foreigners still aren’t all that motivated. The government plans to encourage voting among non-citizens and newcomers to the country. Their participation or non-participation will directly affect such aspects of life as transport, education, construction and improvement projects, and much more.
