Luxembourg will not defend lobsters
There's a lively debate going on in the Grand Duchy Parliament right now. It is about how lobsters, oysters and other invertebrates should be treated. Some MPs are concerned about the cruelty of throwing live lobsters into boiling water. They say these animals feel pain and deserve more humane treatment.
Minister Martine Hansen responded by saying that Luxembourg's current animal protection legislation does not provide for specific measures when it comes to invertebrates. Moreover, the government has no plans to change the law.
This can only change in one case: if the EU adopts a new regulation at the level of the whole alliance. In this case, Luxembourg, as one of the member states, will have to adapt the regulations and directives of the higher authorities to its specific conditions and possibilities.
