Luxembourg's population will rise to a maximum in 2075 — and then begin a steady fall

According to experts in the fields of statistics and demography, the population of Luxembourg will be 787 000 people by 2075. After this peak, there will of course be a fall. By 2100, the population will decrease by 6 000 to 781 000 people.
The population of Europe as a whole will decline by the end of the century. But Luxembourg as a whole is looking at an increase of 21% compared to the current figure. Only four European countries will show greater growth — Malta, Cyprus, Sweden, and Ireland. In them, population growth will be from 28% to 40%.
Such long-range demographic projections have been made several times since 2013. Just five years ago, Eurostat predicted that more than a million people (1 066 377) would live in Luxembourg by 2080. And each time, the estimated population by 2100 declined.
However, experts say that if Luxembourg makes its economy greener and becomes more attractive for migrants, population growth forecasts will rise again. The Grand Duchy is taking steps to achieve this by making it easier for migrants to vote in municipal elections this year.
The study, which at first glance seems like just an interesting statistical assumption, will seriously affect the life of the country. It will be an important argument in the upcoming dialogue on raising the retirement age, as well as in the discussion of Luxembourg’s tax policies.
